Core technologies, assay chemistries, systems, and software support the following key applications:
  • SNP genotyping: A method of determining variation in genetic sequences 
  • Gene expression profiling: The analysis of which genes are active in a particular cell or group of cells 
  • Epigenetic: The process of profiling changes in genetic sequence function 
  • Proteomics: The process of determining which proteins are present in cells and how they interact

Core technologies include:
  • BeadArray technology: A fundamentally different approach to high-density microarrays 
  • Sequencing technology: A method for highly economical, scalable sequencing applications with unparalleled data density 
  • VeraCode technology: Enabling a broad range of multiplexing options for RNA, DNA and protein applications 
  • Oligator technology: World-class oligo manufacturing and quality fueling the Illumina product offering 
  • Assay technology: Robust assay chemistries that provide industry-leading performance, specificity, and results

Beadarray technology highlights:
  • 100% array quality control: The manufacturing process includes a functional validation sequential hybridization of every single array element (bead with oligos). This process, called decoding, allows us to QC every feature of every array to ensure that each array element is present and functional. 
  • High feature redundancy: Each element is represented in high redundancy (> 20-fold), providing industry-leading data quality and reproducibility, through comparison and averaging of the many beads of the same type in an experiment. 
  • Inherent flexibility: New bead pools are easily synthesized and deployed onto either of our two substrates, providing rapid availability of new products and fast turnaround for custom panels. 

BeadArray technology is deployed on either of two multi-sample array formats for DNA or RNA-analysis applications. With both the 96-sample Array Matrix and the multi-sample BeadChip formats, uniform pits are etched into the surface of each substrate to a depth of approximately 3 microns prior to assembly. Beads are then randomly assembled and held in these microwells by Van der Waals forces and hydrostatic interactions with the walls of the well.

The 96-sample Array Matrix format is used in Illumina's GoldenGate Genotyping, DASL Gene Expression, and Focused Arrays applications.an>
